Hello lovely readers, it's time for my Day II blog post at Tokyo! ♥
Day 2: Meiji Shrine + Harajuku + Shibuya
I woke up bright and early today to go to Family Mart (the 7-Eleven equivalent of a convenient store) to buy some breakfast snacks! We got onigiri, deep friend chicken and a bun which turned out to have been stuffed with cheese and assorted vegetables.
The onigiri and chicken were AMAZING. One of the onigiri was just rice and soy sauce but gosh it was so delicious! The chicken on the other hand was crazily flavourful and juicy. Unfortunately the bun was a bit on the weird side for us >_<
Next we went to Meiji Jingu (at Harajuku station), a shrine created for the Meiji Emperor back in the 20th century.
It took a while to get to the main building and before we entered we had to wash our hands in this common water fountain area. The procedure as follows, wash your right hand, then your left hand, then rinse your mouth / drink water if you are thirsty, tilt the "spoon" so that the water rinses the handle and DONE! What a smart way to keep things clean for you and the next person!
In the shrine area, you can pray (bow and clap twice!). You can also write down all your wishes on this little board, and there's a store where you can buy all sorts of goodies to decorate your board! There were wishes from all over the world for just about anything!
After that we walked to the Yoyogi Park, which is right next to the shrine. Unfortunately a lot of the park was closed off for maintenance, not to mention Cherry Blossom season is over and rose blossoming season has yet to come! Still took some photos, uploading them on Facebook!
By the end of this our legs were sore like crazy, luckily it was time for lunch! We met up with some family friends in Shinjuku, who brought us to this restaurant where udon dishes are made fresh! So there are 8 different sauces that come with your udon (including hot and cold noodle soup options), then there are a whole line of tempura dishes you can choose to be your side dish! I got the "basic" one with a soy saucey base like soup and my mom got adventurous and ordered the curry udon.
The curry udon was a bit odd for us, but the basic udon was FANTASTICALLY DELICIOUS!! I would say it is easily one of the best things I have eaten in Japan. All the tempura's were fantastically battered too! =)
After lunch, our family friends brought us back to Harajuku, this time for the shopping side of everything! For those of you who don't know, Harajuku is the area where young teenagers shop and hang out. They are also famous for their crepes, which we didn't get to try today. We basically just window shopped, all the way to Shibuya station, where they had to go. My mom and I longing for a rest, went to Genki Sushi for a little tea break!
We went into Genki Sushi because this chain exists in Malaysia too. The Genki Sushi in Malaysia is nice enough, but the one here in Shibuya was AMAZING!! We ordered a whole bunch of sushi dishes and what not. Look at this humongous salmon belly sushi we got
All the seafood was crazy delicious and fresh!! Not to mention super cheap!! Happy time! =P Next we went to the famous Shibuya crossing, looked at the Hachiko statue (a famous Japanese dog who loyally waited for his owner to arrive at the train station, even years after the owner passed away. You can read more about it here!
We actually went back to rest in our hotel after and just came out again for dinner. Dinner was another great find! The restaurant is located in Shinjuku (close to the area we ate yesterday's dinner at)! We ordered the following dishes
The seafood soup was AMAZING!! Once again, a lot of fresh seafood for cheap!! Anyways, this is it for Tokyo Day II.
p.s. a lot of details are missing including some names and what not, I will update those once I'm back in Toronto!
